Sun Sep 15 14:12:43 UTC 2024: ## Honda Startup Develops Navigation Device for Visually Impaired

**TOKYO, Sep 15 (News On Japan)** – Asirase, the first startup founded by Honda, has developed a groundbreaking navigation device called ‘Ashirase’ to assist visually impaired individuals in walking safely. The device, which attaches to the user’s shoe, uses vibrations to guide them in the right direction, allowing them to navigate independently and with greater confidence.

CEO Chino, who previously worked for a major company, realized the need for innovative solutions to tackle social challenges. He founded Asirase with the aim of creating a device that could make a real difference in the lives of the visually impaired.

Ashirase uses vibrations in both feet to guide the user along a predetermined path, ensuring they know when to turn or change direction. The device is set up through a dedicated smartphone app, allowing users to input their desired destination.

“Unlike many other systems that rely on sound or auditory signals, Ashirase uses the sense of touch to navigate,” explains Chino. “This allows users to keep their ears free for important environmental sounds, which is crucial for their safety.”

A visually impaired man who tested the device shared his experience: “It’s a completely new sensation. Before, I had to rely on sounds through earphones to navigate, but with this, I can feel the direction and know when to turn just by the vibrations in my feet. It’s incredibly convenient.”

The device has been praised for its ease of use, with users quickly adapting to the vibrations. Asirase plans to expand sales beyond Japan to the UK and Spain by 2025, bringing this innovative technology to a wider audience.

With approximately 2 million visually impaired individuals in Japan and 300 million worldwide, this technology has the potential to significantly improve their quality of life and create a more inclusive and accessible environment for all.
