This movement, which lasted for 106 days, defied one of the world’s most tyrannical and corrupt regimes, preventing them from overturning the election results and consolidating authoritarian rule.
The victory comes after a shocking electoral upset saw Bernardo Arevalo, son of a former president and candidate of the small Semilla party, defeat the candidate of the ruling elite, Sandra Torres. This unexpected win sent the “Pact of the Corrupt,” a powerful group controlling the judiciary and legislative branches, into a frenzy.
Led by Attorney General Consuelo Porras, who has been sanctioned for corruption by the US, Canada, and the EU, this cabal attempted to annul the elections, criminalize Arevalo, and block the transition of power.
