**Washington, D.C.** – Republican Congressman Brian Steil (R-WI) has claimed that passing a bill making it harder to vote is the key to securing a Republican victory in the upcoming election. In an interview on Fox News, Steil advocated for attaching the so-called “SAVE Act” to a government funding bill, forcing the Senate to address the measure.
The SAVE Act, which would require voters to present a passport or birth certificate at the polls, has been criticized by Democrats as an attempt to suppress voter turnout. Steil, however, insists that it is necessary to “secure the election” and argues that a government shutdown is not a concern.
“I don’t think anybody should be afraid of a shutdown,” Steil told Fox News host Maria Bartiromo. “What we need to do is attach the SAVE Act to the CRs, the last train leaving the station, put it in the lap of the Senate and force them not only to keep the government open until we can win in this election.”
This comes as the House is set to vote on a continuing resolution to fund the government, potentially paving the way for a showdown between the two parties. The Senate, currently controlled by Democrats, is unlikely to support the SAVE Act.
Meanwhile, a man suspected of plotting to assassinate former President Donald Trump was charged with federal gun crimes on Monday. Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was arrested after allegedly aiming a rifle at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach. Routh’s arrest comes amid a heated political climate, with Trump blaming Vice President Kamala Harris for using “inflammatory rhetoric” that he claims put his life in danger.
Political analysts have criticized Trump’s rhetoric, pointing out the lack of evidence linking Harris’s criticism to the attempted assassinations. Some have compared Trump’s language to that of George Wallace, a notorious segregationist who was shot during his presidential campaign in 1972.
