**KOTA KINABALU** – Sabah is gearing up to host the Malaysia Day celebrations on September 16th, marking the 61st anniversary of the formation of Malaysia. Thousands are expected to gather at Padang Merdeka for a spectacular event filled with cultural performances, music, and a special focus on national unity.
Over 30,000 people are anticipated to attend the celebration, enjoying performances by local artists and a special highlight titled “Rumah Madani: Jiwa Merdeka,” showcasing Malaysia’s achievements and strengths through five segments. The event promises to be a memorable one, with a focus on the nation’s history, unity, and future.
Two young volunteers, Khaleeda Idzwani and Syafiah Qistina, shared their excitement about participating in the momentous event. The 17-year-old friends gave up their school holidays to contribute to the celebration, distributing souvenir books to dignitaries, including Sabah Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew expressed her enthusiasm about hosting the event, which rotates between Sabah, Sarawak, and Peninsular Malaysia every three years. “We only get to host this historic event once every three years, so we’re making sure everything runs smoothly,” she said, encouraging the public to join in the festivities.
The celebration will kick off at 5pm, with the first 5,000 visitors receiving recyclable bags and enjoying performances by local artistes. The highlight of the evening will be the signing of a commemorative book by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Chief Minister Hajiji Noor, and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, followed by a cake-cutting ceremony.
A special four-minute video, “Surat Kemerdekaan,” produced by the state branch of the National Film Development Corporation (Finas), will be screened, highlighting the importance of safeguarding the nation for future generations. The event will conclude with a 10-minute fireworks display and performances by several popular singers.
The Malaysia Day celebrations promise to be a vibrant and memorable event, bringing together Sabahans and Malaysians to celebrate the nation’s unity and heritage.
