Florida Gators defensive back Trikweze Bridges was ejected for targeting in the first half of their game against Texas A&M on Saturday. The call, which came after a review, sparked controversy as Bridges appeared to be attempting a legal tackle on Aggies receiver Noah Thomas.
While ESPN rules analyst Matt Austin acknowledged the difficulty of the call, he confirmed that it was targeting according to the letter of the law. Bridges’ head hit Thomas’ helmet despite an attempt to wrap up his legs. “This is extremely unfortunate for the Florida player,” said Austin, “but you always look for a launch and an attack and an attempt to punish the defender. This player wrapped up the receiver.”
The ejection occurred shortly before halftime and won’t impact Bridges’ availability for next week’s game against Mississippi State. However, the call drew criticism from many, with some deeming it “the worst targeting call in CFB history.”
The incident added to Florida’s woes as they struggled mightily in the first half, allowing 302 total yards to Texas A&M. The Aggies took a commanding 20-0 lead into the break. The Gators’ offense also struggled, managing only 73 yards, with just 7 coming on the ground.
The loss further intensifies the pressure on head coach Billy Napier, who is entering his second season at Florida. Fans expressed their displeasure as Napier headed towards the locker room. Despite the struggles, Gators legend Steve Spurrier believes Napier will be given time to turn things around.
“I really feel like nothing’s gonna happen this year,” said Spurrier. “We’ve got a lot invested in Napier and his staff. He’s gonna get an opportunity to turn it around. And hopefully, it’ll be this year. I think we need to have a winning season to get the fans back on good graces.”
