Sun Sep 15 15:00:13 UTC 2024: ## Flappy Bird’s Revival Faces Controversy as Original Developer Denounces Project

The highly anticipated return of Flappy Bird, scheduled for this autumn, has hit a snag as original developer Doug Nguyen has publicly distanced himself from the project. In a tweet on Sunday, Nguyen stated that he has “no related [sic] with their game” and did not sell any rights to the game. He also expressed his disapproval of the project’s connection to cryptocurrency, as the game’s revival is being spearheaded by Michael Roberts, who is linked to crypto firm 1208 Productions.

Nguyen’s statement sparked outrage among industry figures, with Tommy Millar, animator for Halfway House, commenting on the situation. “Between generative AI scraping and stuff like this, this really has become the age of petty scumbag art thievery from legitimate creatives in order to generate unearned profit,” he stated.

Despite the developer’s denouncement, the Flappy Bird revival is still slated to launch this fall with mobile apps for iOS and Android planned for next year. The game’s original release in 2013 saw tremendous popularity, attracting over 100 million players and generating substantial revenue. However, in 2014, Nguyen abruptly removed the game from sale, citing concerns about its addictive nature.

The controversy surrounding the revival highlights the ongoing debate around intellectual property rights in the digital age, particularly concerning the appropriation of existing works for commercial gain.
