Sun Sep 15 09:27:35 UTC 2024: ## F1’s Penalty Point System Under Review After Magnussen’s Baku Ban

Following Kevin Magnussen’s suspension from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix due to accumulating 12 penalty points, Formula 1 is set to review its controversial penalty points system. The review comes after drivers, particularly Pierre Gasly, voiced their concerns over the harshness of the system.

The current system automatically suspends a driver for a race if they reach 12 penalty points. Magnussen hit the limit after receiving points for various infractions, culminating in a collision with Gasly at the Italian Grand Prix.

Gasly argued against Magnussen being penalized, deeming it “harsh” and highlighting the “double jeopardy” aspect of the situation, where Magnussen received both a penalty and penalty points for the same incident.

Following a drivers’ briefing at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the FIA revealed its openness to reviewing the system. While no formal process has been enacted yet, the Sporting Advisory Committee will discuss the issue post-season, with any potential changes being presented to stakeholders before being implemented.

Despite the FIA’s analysis showing an average of only 2.2 penalty points awarded per race, the review is expected to take place as a result of driver feedback.

While the review is underway, the FIA has already made minor adjustments to its rules, eliminating penalty points for minor transgressions like track limits violations. The upcoming review may result in further tweaks to the penalty point system, ensuring a more balanced and equitable approach to driver penalties.
