**BRUSSELS, BELGIUM -** iPad owners in the European Union will soon have the same app download freedom as their iPhone counterparts, with the launch of alternative app stores starting September 16th. Apple has announced changes to iPadOS 18, allowing third-party app stores to operate in the region.
This move comes after pressure from EU regulators, who have been pushing for increased competition in the app market. The new guidelines require Apple to allow app developers to use alternative app stores, ensuring consumers can download apps outside of the App Store.
However, these alternative apps won’t be a free-for-all. Apple will still require “notarization” of apps, meaning they must pass security and safety checks before being available on alternative stores. This process involves signing and encrypting the app, ensuring user safety.
Additionally, developers opting to distribute through alternative stores and having signed the Alternative Terms Addendum, will benefit from lower commission rates.
The change is part of a broader effort by the EU to create a more competitive digital market. The introduction of alternative app stores for iPad users is expected to open up the market, giving developers more options and consumers more choices.
This update will also see the launch of alternative browser apps on the same date, as well as the implementation of a new fee calculator for iPadOS apps within the App Store Connect section.
