Sun Sep 15 12:23:37 UTC 2024: ## UEFA Threatens to Ban England from European Competitions Over Proposed Regulator

**London, UK** – UEFA has warned England that its national team and Premier League clubs could be banned from European competitions if the UK government’s proposed independent football regulator is implemented. The threat comes in a letter sent by UEFA to UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, expressing concerns over government interference in the sport.

The proposed regulator, part of the UK’s Football Governance Bill, aims to safeguard the financial stability of clubs and prevent them from joining breakaway leagues like the European Super League. However, UEFA argues that the regulator’s broad powers would violate its rules against government interference in football.

“We have specific rules that guard against this in order to guarantee the autonomy of sport and fairness of sporting competition,” wrote UEFA General Secretary Theodore Theodoridis in the letter. “The ultimate sanction for which would be excluding the federation from UEFA and teams from competition.”

This sanction could potentially prevent England from competing in the upcoming 2028 European Championship, which they are co-hosting, and exclude Premier League clubs from the Champions League and other tournaments.

UEFA specifically criticized the regulator’s “scope creep” beyond financial sustainability and heritage assets, arguing that similar regulators in other countries would impede UEFA’s ability to govern football effectively across Europe.

The UK government, however, remains steadfast in its support of the regulator. A spokesperson said the bill “will put fans back at the heart of the game, and tackle fundamental governance problems to ensure that English football is sustainable for the benefit of the clubs’ communities going forward.”

The potential ban of England from European competitions has sparked controversy and ignited a debate about the role of government in football. It remains to be seen whether the UK government will compromise on the regulator’s scope or if UEFA will ultimately enforce its sanctions.
