Sun Sep 15 09:32:35 UTC 2024: ## England’s Euro 2028 Participation in Jeopardy Due to Proposed Football Regulator

**London, UK -** The prospect of England hosting and competing in the 2028 European Championship is facing a major threat due to UEFA’s opposition to the UK government’s plans for an independent football regulator.

In a letter to Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, UEFA General Secretary Theodore Theodoridis warned that the establishment of an independent regulator, aimed at preventing the formation of a European Super League and promoting financial stability, would be considered “state meddling” in football.

UEFA has explicitly stated that such interference could result in England being banned from competing in the 2028 Euros, as well as potentially prohibiting UK clubs from participating in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.

The proposed regulator was originally announced by the previous Conservative government, but Labour has committed to continuing with the initiative.

While UEFA has suggested this might be a “thin end of the wedge”, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) insists that the regulator would not impact England’s participation in the tournament.

The proposed regulator has garnered support from groups like Fair Game, who argue that English football is in desperate need of financial reform. They dismissed UEFA’s warnings as “nonsense”.

The situation remains tense, with UEFA closely monitoring the situation and prepared to take action if they deem the government’s actions to be a breach of their regulations.
