**Ambleteuse, France** – Eight people tragically lost their lives attempting to cross the English Channel from France to England early Sunday morning, French authorities confirmed. The incident, which involved a boat carrying 59 people, highlights the growing danger of these crossings and the ongoing pressure on both French and British governments to address the crisis.
Rescue crews were alerted to a boat in distress off the coast of Ambleteuse in the Pas-de-Calais region around 1 am. Despite the efforts of rescue and medical crews, eight individuals were confirmed dead. Victims included men from Eritrea, Sudan, Syria, Egypt, Iran, and Afghanistan.
The remaining 51 individuals onboard the vessel are now receiving care.
This latest tragedy brings the total number of deaths during Channel crossings this year to 46. Just the day before, authorities reported eight separate attempts to cross the channel, with approximately 200 migrants rescued.
The English Channel is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, known for strong currents that make crossing on small, often overcrowded boats extremely perilous.
The incident has once again sparked calls for urgent action from both British and French authorities to address the desperate circumstances driving people to attempt these dangerous journeys and to find safer alternatives.
