**Guwahati, Sept 14:** Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed to Paresh Barua, the head of the proscribed ULFA(I), to refrain from any actions that could jeopardize the future of the state’s youth. He made this plea at ‘The Assam Tribune’s Dialogue 2024’, expressing deep concern over the planting of explosives on Independence Day.
Sarma highlighted Assam’s significant progress towards becoming a “powerhouse” within the next ten years, contingent on maintaining peace and cooperation. However, he emphasized that the recent bomb threats have raised serious concerns, potentially hindering the state’s growth trajectory.
“We cannot afford to compromise on the safety and security of our people,” Sarma stated, stressing the importance of resolving differences through dialogue rather than resorting to violence. He asserted that the state’s prosperity hinges on a peaceful environment that attracts investments and fosters economic growth.
Addressing concerns regarding recent anti-non-Assamese sentiments, Sarma urged citizens to embrace inclusivity and recognize the contributions of Assamese residing outside the state. He cautioned against promoting a hostile environment that could deter investments and hinder opportunities for Assamese youth.
Sarma’s call for peace comes at a time when Assam is witnessing substantial development initiatives, attracting major industrial houses like Tatas, Reliance, Adani, and Dassault. He envisions Guwahati transforming into a major gateway to South East Asia, further bolstering the state’s economic prowess.
DONER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, participating virtually in the dialogue, echoed the sentiment of progress, stating that the North East region has emerged as a hub for trade, culture, and connectivity, fueling India’s growth engine. He highlighted the significant investments pouring into the region, paving the way for a new era of peace and prosperity.
