**Belfast, Northern Ireland** – The redevelopment of Casement Park, a key sporting venue in West Belfast, has been thrown into uncertainty after the UK government announced it would not fund the project in time for the Euro 2028 football tournament. The government cited a dramatic increase in estimated costs, from £180m to over £400m, a figure that GAA President Jarlath Burns disputed.
Burns expressed his frustration, labeling the past year of deliberations a “pantomime” and accusing the government of unfairly citing a cost figure that did not align with the GAA’s own estimates. While the government will not provide funding for a Euro 2028-compliant stadium, Burns urged them to clarify their contribution towards a rebuild.
The GAA has already pledged £58m for the project, including funds secured from the Irish government. The Irish Taoiseach, Simon Harris, confirmed that the €50m (£42.2m) pledged by his government remains in place.
Meanwhile, Stormont’s Finance Minister Caoimhe Archibald expressed her intention to seek clarification on the UK government’s stated cost figure, stating that “Casement will be built,” and emphasizing that the project is an “executive commitment.”
The initial plan for a new stadium at Casement Park dates back to 2011, with an estimated cost of £77.5m. However, rising costs and the inclusion of football matches, requiring a higher specification stadium, have significantly inflated the price.
Despite the setback, the GAA remains committed to the project, albeit without the added pressure of a Euro 2028 deadline. The decision leaves the future of Casement Park uncertain, with the potential for a revised, smaller-scale project still on the table. The GAA, however, is critical of the missed opportunity for a Euro 2028-compliant stadium, citing the damage caused by the delayed tendering process.
