Mon Sep 16 16:13:31 UTC 2024: ## Former RG Kar Hospital Principal and Police Officer Arrested in Doctor’s Rape and Murder Cover-Up

**Kolkata:** The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station, for their alleged involvement in covering up the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee woman doctor at the hospital on August 9th.

The CBI alleges that Ghosh, who was informed about the murder at 9:58 am, failed to immediately register a formal complaint with the police. Instead, he downplayed the incident as a possible suicide, despite the presence of external injury marks on the victim’s body. He also avoided meeting the victim’s parents when they arrived at the hospital.

The CBI further claims that Ghosh was in constant contact with Mondal and an advocate, potentially discussing ways to tamper with evidence. Mondal, despite being informed about the crime at 10:03 am, allegedly delayed reaching the crime scene for over an hour, despite the police station being only 10 minutes away from the hospital.

The investigation revealed a 14-hour delay in lodging the FIR by the Kolkata Police, a fact repeatedly highlighted in the Calcutta High Court and Supreme Court. The CBI alleges that Mondal deliberately delayed the FIR, falsified the initial General Diary Entry, and failed to cordon off the crime scene, leading to the destruction of vital evidence.

The CBI also accuses Mondal of delaying the issuance of the victim’s death certificate and autopsy, trying to protect the accused, Sanjoy Roy, and hastily cremating the victim’s body despite her family’s request for a second autopsy.

Ghosh and Mondal are the first arrests made by the CBI in the RG Kar rape and murder case. The former was already in custody for alleged financial irregularities at the hospital. Both are accused of being part of a cover-up by the hospital administration following the doctor’s tragic death.
