Mon Sep 16 09:00:38 UTC 2024: ## Former RG Kar Hospital Principal and Police Officer Sent to CBI Custody in Doctor’s Rape-Murder Case

**Kolkata, September 10, 2023:** A local court on Sunday remanded former principal of RG Kar hospital, Sandip Ghosh, and Tala police station officer-in-charge, Abhijit Mondal, to CBI custody until September 17. The duo were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the rape-murder of a doctor at the state-run hospital.

The CBI, investigating the case, believes that Ghosh and Mondal played significant roles in the crime. Mondal was arrested on Saturday evening, while charges of evidence tampering were added against Ghosh, who is currently in judicial custody for corruption charges related to the hospital.

The CBI claims that both individuals were involved in a larger conspiracy and that Mondal, who failed to provide satisfactory answers during questioning, had delayed the registration of the FIR and tampered with evidence. The FIR was registered on August 9th, over 11 hours after Mondal was informed of the doctor’s death.

The agency alleged that both Ghosh and Mondal attempted to downplay the incident and cover up the crime. They believe that the police should have treated the case as a suo motu case immediately given the nature of the crime.

Both individuals were charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for disobeying lawful orders as public servants, tampering with evidence, and criminal conspiracy. The CBI claims that Ghosh gave instructions to Mondal on how to proceed with the rape-murder case, highlighting a close connection between the two.

The body of the postgraduate trainee was discovered on August 9th in the seminar hall of the state-run hospital. Three individuals, including Ghosh and Mondal, have been arrested in connection with the case.
