**SHILLONG, MEGHALAYA** – The Border Roads Organization (BRO), known for its vital role in developing infrastructure in India’s border areas, has launched a groundbreaking research initiative to reduce the environmental impact of road construction.
In a collaborative effort, the BRO’s Headquarters Research & Development Establishment (HQ R&D Estt), Shillong, has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi to study and minimize the carbon footprint associated with road infrastructure projects.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by the BRO and researchers from IIT Delhi, outlining a 24-month research project to develop strategies and tools for sustainable road construction. The project aims to create a computer-based tool that will guide agencies in planning road projects with reduced carbon emissions.
Once finalized and approved by the Indian Roads Congress (IRC), this tool will be made available to road construction agencies nationwide.
This initiative reflects the BRO’s commitment to enhancing construction efficiency while simultaneously addressing the global challenge of mitigating climate change. The organization’s focus on sustainable practices is particularly relevant in border areas where challenging terrain and extreme weather conditions often necessitate innovative and environmentally friendly solutions.
