New Delhi – Indian Member of Parliament Praveen Khandelwal has called for immediate action against e-commerce giants Flipkart and Amazon, accusing them of engaging in anti-competitive practices that have harmed domestic traders. In a letter to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, Khandelwal urged the government to take swift action against the platforms based on findings from a recent investigation by the Competition Commission of India (CCI).
The CCI investigation, while not yet publicly released, reportedly revealed that Flipkart and Amazon have been providing preferential treatment to select sellers, engaging in deep discounting, and forming collusive agreements with leading smartphone brands. These practices have reportedly distorted competition, particularly in the smartphone market, and violated India’s Competition Act.
The investigation also scrutinized Walmart’s stake in Flipkart and Amazon’s wholesale arm and proxy sellers, raising concerns about potential violations of India’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) regulations.
The CCI investigation, fueled by complaints from trade bodies such as the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), has concluded that both Flipkart and Amazon have favored specific sellers and offered exclusive deals and discounts, particularly during major sales events, effectively squeezing out smaller businesses.
Khandelwal has recommended the immediate implementation of e-commerce rules under the Consumer Protection Act, urging the government to suspend the operations of Flipkart and Amazon until they comply with the law. He also called for an end to major sales events, which he argues have further distorted the market.
The government is expected to review the situation and take steps to ensure a fair and transparent e-commerce sector that allows small traders to compete alongside global giants. The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for the future of India’s rapidly growing e-commerce market.
