**Bengaluru:** Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator from Karnataka’s RR Nagar constituency, Munirathna, was arrested on Saturday for allegedly issuing death threats to a contractor and making casteist remarks against the Vokkaliga and Dalit communities.

The arrest came after an audio clip surfaced online, purportedly containing Munirathna’s voice, making the offensive statements. Following a complaint by the contractor, Cheluvaraju, who claimed Munirathna demanded Rs 20 lakh from him and threatened him with harm, the police registered two FIRs against the MLA.

Cheluvaraju had also met with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, expressing concern over the lack of action despite the FIRs. CM Siddaramaiah assured him of legal action and protection.

Munirathna was apprehended in Nangali village near Mulbagal town in Kolar district, while allegedly attempting to flee to Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh. He is currently in the custody of Bengaluru Police.

While the BJP issued a notice to Munirathna seeking an explanation for his actions, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi criticized the Congress government for “hasty” arrest and demanded forensic examination of the audio.

Other political leaders, including Minister for Social Welfare H.C. Mahadevappa, condemned Munirathna’s remarks and called for legal action.

The case has sparked controversy and raised concerns over caste-based discrimination and threats within the state. The police are currently investigating the matter and further legal action is expected.
