Baku, Azerbaijan – Haas rookie Oliver Bearman impressed in his second Formula 1 outing, holding his own in a thrilling battle against seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Despite losing out to Hamilton in the final stages of the race, Bearman displayed impressive composure and racecraft, earning a valuable point finish in 10th place. He admitted to letting the Mercedes driver pass due to tire management concerns but was ultimately pleased with his performance.
“It was a tough race,” said Bearman. “I wasn’t running in the points until the end because of the crash in front. The car was really fast, and in all honesty, I was really fast as well. I just lost a lot of time in the first stint just not driving very fast. I was just saving the tyres too much, and that wasn’t really necessary.”
Bearman’s confidence was evident in his assessment of his duel with Hamilton. He felt reassured by the veteran driver’s clean driving style, stating, “You know when you go around the outside that he’s going to leave you space, which is a nice feeling. Like in Turn 1, I knew that he wasn’t going to put me in a wall, which is a bit less sure with some other drivers.”
The rookie’s performance continued a positive trend for Haas, who are enjoying a promising start to the season. Bearman’s point earned in Baku adds to his previous seventh-place finish in Saudi Arabia, further highlighting his potential within the sport.
