Ferrari’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix ended in a disappointing collision that cost them a potential podium finish. While Charles Leclerc secured a second-place finish, the race could have been much better for the Italian team.
Leclerc started from pole position and initially led the race, but a slow pit stop and a strategic error allowed McLaren’s Oscar Piastri to take the lead. Despite a late surge from Leclerc, his tires were worn, and he couldn’t close the gap to Piastri.
Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz was in contention for a podium position until he collided with Red Bull’s Sergio Perez on the penultimate lap. The incident wiped out both cars, denying Sainz a chance to use the slipstream of his teammate to overtake Piastri.
Team Principal Fred Vasseur admitted that the team made mistakes during the race, particularly with tire management and strategy. He attributed the issues to conservative tactics in the second stint and the difficulty of driving in dirty air.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Ferrari can take some positives from the weekend. Their pace was strong throughout, and they remain in contention for the championship. The team will now focus on the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix, hoping to bounce back from the Baku setback.
Leclerc currently sits third in the Drivers’ Championship, while Ferrari is now trailing McLaren in the Constructors’ standings. The next race in Singapore will be crucial for both drivers and the team as they look to claw their way back into the championship fight.
