Sun Sep 15 13:56:17 UTC 2024: ## Asteroid Flies Past Earth, Posing No Threat but Raising Concerns
**Washington D.C.** – On September 14th, 2024, asteroid 2024 RN16, measuring approximately 110 feet in diameter, made a close approach to Earth. While the asteroid passed at a distance of 1.6 million kilometers, which is significantly greater than the distance between Earth and the Moon, its classification as a “potentially hazardous asteroid” by NASA has raised concerns.
2024 RN16 belongs to a group of asteroids known as Apollo asteroids, whose orbits intersect Earth’s path around the Sun. This makes close encounters like this one possible, although they pose no immediate threat.
However, the potential impact of an asteroid of this size remains a significant concern. A collision with Earth could release the energy equivalent of 16 megatons of TNT if it exploded 29 kilometers above the ground. While such events are considered rare, occurring roughly once every 990 years, their potential for devastation highlights the importance of continued monitoring and research into near-Earth objects.
