Kolkata, India – Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami, recovering from ankle surgery, has set his sights on full fitness before making a return to the international stage. While he remains tight-lipped on a specific date for his comeback, the 34-year-old has confirmed he is willing to play domestic cricket for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy to ensure he is 100% ready.
Shami, who last played in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, underwent surgery earlier this year and has been sidelined since. Speaking at the Cricket Association of Bengal’s (CAB) annual awards ceremony, he expressed his desire to return without any discomfort. “I am working hard to make a comeback soon because I know I have been out of action for quite some time,” he said. “But I want to ensure there is no discomfort when I return. I’ve to work on my fitness, so that there is no discomfort.”
Shami is expected to feature in either one or two of Bengal’s opening Ranji Trophy matches against UP and Bihar later this month. While he has already begun bowling, he is taking a cautious approach and will not rush his comeback. “I don’t want to rush and risk getting injured again,” Shami said.
His return will be crucial for India’s upcoming five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia, a series where Shami believes India is the favorite. “We are the favourites, they should be worried,” he stated confidently.
Shami’s commitment to Bengal cricket was also recognized at the ceremony, where he was honored for his long association with the state. “I often say I was born in UP but made in Bengal,” Shami shared. “This is a journey of over 20 years, and I am grateful for the love and support Bengal has shown me.”
The ceremony also saw several other Bengal cricketers recognized for their achievements, including Anustup Majumdar who was awarded the ‘Cricketer of the Year’, and Abishek Porel, who was named the ‘Gentleman Cricketer of the Year’.
