**Nairobi, Kenya** – The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) has awarded a public-private partnership (PPP) concession to Adani Group and Africa50, a unit of the African Development Bank, to construct high-voltage power lines across the country. The project, estimated to cost $1.3 billion, will be funded entirely by the private sector, according to David Ndii, chairman of President William Ruto’s Council of Economic Advisers.
This move comes amidst growing public discontent over a separate proposal to grant Adani Group a 30-year concession to run Kenya’s largest airport. Aviation workers staged a one-day strike last week to protest the plan. The Kenyan government, facing heavy debt burdens, is looking to attract private investment for crucial infrastructure projects.
Africa50 has already been involved in constructing a 185-kilometer Loosuk-Lessos transmission line under a PPP agreement. Meanwhile, Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. has expressed interest in operating the Gilgil-Thika-Malaa electricity line, although this proposal is still under evaluation.
Ketraco has previously stated that it is relying on private investment to close a $3 billion funding gap needed for projects due by 2030. The partnership with Adani Group and Africa50 represents a significant step towards achieving this goal and ensuring continued development of Kenya’s power infrastructure.
