**Argyll, Scotland** – The A83 Rest and Be Thankful has reopened with a diversion after a significant landslide triggered by heavy overnight rainfall. The landslide, estimated at 500 tonnes of debris, was contained by protective fencing and pits, according to Bear Scotland.
As a precaution, traffic is being diverted along the Old Military Road, expected to be in place until Tuesday, when a decision will be made regarding a full reopening of the A83. Eddie Ross, Bear Scotland project manager, highlighted the effectiveness of the debris control measures, stating, “The debris fences and pit have retained all of the debris from what was a considerable landslide event.”
Ross attributed the speed of the reopening to the efficient deployment of the Old Military Road diversion, minimizing delays to a 20-minute estimate. He emphasized a continued assessment of the situation to ensure the safety of a full reopening under traffic signal control.
This incident underscores the persistent vulnerability of the A83 to landslides, with seven significant occurrences recorded in October 2023 alone. The road’s significance as a vital connection between the Mull of Kintyre and Loch Lomond necessitates a long-term solution, with Transport Scotland announcing plans for a £470 million, mile-long tunnel to mitigate future disruptions.
