Sat Sep 14 10:35:58 UTC 2024: ## Boeing Workers Strike After Rejecting Contract Offer, Production Halted
**SEATTLE** – A strike by 33,000 Boeing machinists in the Pacific Northwest began Friday after they overwhelmingly rejected a proposed contract offering a 25% wage increase over four years. The strike, which is expected to shut down production of Boeing’s best-selling jetliners, is a significant blow to the company already facing billions in losses and a damaged reputation.
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers reported that 94.6% of members rejected the contract, with 96% voting to strike. The machinists, who currently earn an average of $75,608 annually excluding overtime, expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed deal.
Boeing has stated they will take steps to conserve cash while their CEO explores alternative contract proposals to satisfy the unionized workers. The company’s stock took a hit, falling more than 3% in afternoon trading, bringing its decline for the year to nearly 40%.
The strike’s impact on airline flights is not expected to be immediate, however, production delays could eventually affect delivery schedules.
