Sat Sep 14 00:36:00 UTC 2024: ## Lib Dems Propose Tax on Wealthiest to Fund Winter Fuel Payments, Instead of Cutting Pensioner Support

**Brighton, UK** – Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has called for a tax on the wealthiest individuals to fund winter fuel payments for pensioners, instead of the government’s proposed cuts.

Davey, who arrived at the Lib Dem conference in Brighton on a jet ski, stated that his party is the only one offering a solution to the “awful financial mess” left by the Conservatives.

He criticized the government’s plan to withdraw winter fuel payments from over 10 million pensioners, calling it “unfair” and arguing that the government should instead consider a capital gains tax on the wealthiest.

“The Conservatives won’t admit there’s a problem, but there is a problem,” Davey told Sky News. “The financial deficit is large, the Conservatives ran the budget in a very bad way, and there needs to be a solution to that.”

“But withdrawing winter fuel payments from struggling pensioners isn’t the solution,” he continued. “We’ve put forward our solution. We’ve said, look at the capital gains tax on the very, very wealthiest.”

Davey also suggested reversing the Conservative government’s tax cuts for banks as an alternative way to deal with the deficit.

The Lib Dems have pledged to be a “constructive opposition,” focusing on proposing alternative solutions rather than solely criticizing the government.

Meanwhile, Labour’s largest union, Unite, is calling for a U-turn on the winter fuel payment cuts. A motion submitted to the Labour conference argues that pensioners should not be the first to face cuts and that the government should focus on a vision for a better future.

This move presents a potential challenge to Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, who has been adopting a more cautious approach to governing. Despite the party’s large parliamentary majority, the potential for dissent among Labour members is growing, particularly regarding the proposed cuts to pensioner support.
