Sat Sep 14 17:56:00 UTC 2024: ## McIlroy Takes Lead in Irish Open, Eyes “Shine” on 2024 Season
**Royal County Down, Northern Ireland -** Rory McIlroy put himself in prime position to win the Amgen Irish Open on Sunday, taking a one-shot lead after a solid third round performance. The world number three carded a two-under 69 despite challenging conditions at the renowned Royal County Down.
McIlroy’s round was highlighted by an eagle on the first hole and two additional birdies. While he encountered a couple of bogeys, the Holywood native remained composed in the wind and declared himself pleased with his performance.
“I’m very happy,” said McIlroy. “Conditions were very, very difficult. I thought I did well.”
The victory would be a welcome addition to McIlroy’s impressive 2024 season, which already includes wins on both sides of the Atlantic and strong performances in major tournaments. However, he is seeking to put a “nice shine” on the year after a string of near-misses in majors.
“It would be amazing [to win],” McIlroy said regarding reclaiming the Irish Open title. “After the sort of year that I’ve had and the close misses, it wouldn’t make up for all of it, but it would go a long way in putting a nice shine on 2024.”
McIlroy will tee off his final round at 1:05pm on Sunday alongside Italian challenger Mateo Manassero, who is currently in second place. Fellow Holywood golf club member Tom McKibbin is the next best-placed Irishman, tied for 13th.
