**ZURICH, SWITZERLAND:** Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra’s 2024 season concluded with a frustrating second-place finish in the Diamond League final, echoing his result from last year’s competition. In a nail-biting contest, Chopra’s best throw of 87.86 meters fell just 1cm short of Grenada’s Anderson Peters’ winning throw of 87.87 meters, which was achieved on his first attempt.
This marks the third runner-up finish of the season for Chopra, who also came in second at the Paris Olympics and the Doha Diamond League. The narrow margin of defeat in Zurich further amplifies the disappointment, leaving the Indian star visibly frustrated.
Chopra, hampered by a groin injury since before the Olympics, struggled to find his rhythm throughout the final. Despite his trademark roar on his final throw, which landed at 86.46 meters, he couldn’t bridge the gap to Peters.
Despite the setbacks, Chopra’s drive for victory remains undimmed. He’ll now focus on recovery and is expected to undergo major surgery to address his groin issue. This will likely sideline him for a significant portion of the early 2025 season.
Looking ahead, Chopra faces a formidable challenge in 2025. He will be aiming to defend his World Championship title against Peters, who is making a remarkable comeback from a serious injury, and reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem.
Meanwhile, fellow Indian athlete Avinash Sable finished ninth in the 3000m steeplechase at the Diamond League Final.
