Rome, Italy – Franca Bettoia, the Italian actress best known for her role in the 1964 cult sci-fi film “The Final Man on Earth,” has passed away at the age of 88. The news was confirmed by her family to the Italian news agency Adnkronos.
Bettoia, born in Rome on May 14, 1936, made her film debut in 1955 and rose to prominence as “the opposite lady” in Pietro Germi’s “Man of Straw” (1958), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. She went on to star in a number of films, including “Duel of Champions” (1961) with Alan Ladd, “Day by Day, Desperately” (1961), and “Don’t Touch the White Girl” (1974).
In “The Final Man on Earth,” directed by Ubaldo Ragona and Sidney Salkow, Bettoia played Ruth, a woman who, alongside Vincent Price’s Dr. Robert Morgan, is trying to survive a plague that has turned humans into vampiric creatures. The film, based on Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel “I Am Legend,” was filmed in Rome and became a cult classic.
Bettoia was married to Italian actor Ugo Tognazzi, known for his role in the 1978 film “La Cage aux Folles,” from 1972 until his death in 1990. They had two children, Gianmarco Tognazzi, an actor, and Maria Sole Tognazzi, a director.
Bettoia’s last film appearance was in “Teste rasate” (1993), where she played the mother of her real-life son, Gianmarco.
She will be remembered for her contributions to Italian cinema and for her memorable role in “The Final Man on Earth,” a film that continues to captivate audiences today.
