**Kolkata, India** – Peace negotiations between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and protesting doctors over the rape and murder of a colleague at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital hit a roadblock on Saturday. The impasse arose from the doctors’ demand for videorecording of the planned meeting, which was ultimately rejected by government officials.
The doctors have been staging a protest since August 9, demanding justice for the slain doctor. The delegation sent to meet Banerjee at her residence requested videorecording of the meeting as a measure of transparency. While Banerjee offered them tea and urged them to participate, the doctors remained firm on their demand, stating they would only accept refreshments after justice is delivered.
The doctors’ demands are fueled by the recent arrest of a police officer and the ex-principal of RG Kar Hospital, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, by the CBI for allegedly tampering with evidence in the case. Dr. Aqeeb, a member of the delegation, emphasized that the arrest validates their suspicions and that the incident represents “institutional crime.” They demand the resignation of all officials potentially involved and vow to continue their protest until justice is served.
Banerjee, while assuring the doctors that any recordings would be shared, expressed that the “live streaming” demand could not be met due to the ongoing Supreme Court proceedings. Despite the impasse, the doctors are determined to see their demands met and continue their fight for justice for their slain colleague.
