**Ada, OK** – East Central University (ECU) has announced the launch of its first doctoral program, a Doctor of Education in Rural Education, pending accreditation approval from the Higher Learning Commission.
This innovative program will focus on addressing the unique challenges and opportunities faced by rural school leaders and working adults.
“Rural education leaders need to know how to address the unique issues in rural communities,” said Dr. Jerry Mihelic, program director. “These issues can include access to healthcare, food security, internet connectivity, and high-quality educational resources.”
The program’s curriculum will be designed to provide educational leaders with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate curriculum development, strategic planning, supervision, organizational change, and advocacy within the specific context of rural schools.
Courses will be offered fully online in eight-week terms, allowing working professionals to balance graduate study with their professional lives.
A unique feature of the program is the applied dissertation, which allows students to conduct research on issues, challenges, or policy questions in their local rural communities. This research is designed to develop solutions that have a direct impact on the daily operations and activities of rural schools.
“We believe this program will be a valuable asset to the rural education community,” said Dr. Mihelic. “It will equip leaders with the knowledge and skills they need to effectively address the unique needs of rural schools and students.”
