**Leopardstown, Ireland:** Economics, ridden by Tom Marquand, secured a thrilling victory in the prestigious Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown on Saturday, edging out Aidan O’Brien’s Auguste Rodin by a neck. This marked Economics’ first Group One triumph, showcasing his potential as a top-class horse.
The William Haggas-trained colt, despite missing the Epsom Derby, had shown strong form in recent races, including a victory in the Prix Guillaume d’Ornano. Despite the long layoff, Economics lived up to his pre-race favorite status, overtaking Luxembourg in the final straight and holding off the late charge from Auguste Rodin.
Auguste Rodin, who had shown flashes of brilliance this season, finished a close second after a disappointing fifth place in the King George at Ascot earlier this month. Shin Emperor, a Japanese challenger, placed third, while O’Brien’s Irish Derby winner, Los Angeles, finished fourth.
Earlier in the day, Tom Marquand had already secured a Group One win on Porta Fortuna in the Matron Stakes, further solidifying her position as a leading filly over a mile. The Donnacha O’Brien-trained filly showcased her impressive closing speed to win by a length, outpacing the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Fallen Angel.
The Irish Champions Festival continues on Sunday at The Curragh with four more Group One races, including the Irish St Leger.
