Sat Sep 14 13:35:58 UTC 2024: ## Tebboune Wins Second Term in Algerian Election Amidst Contested Results

**ALGIERS** – Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has secured a second term with 84.3% of the vote in the recent election, according to final results announced on Saturday. The preliminary results released by the electoral authority ANIE initially indicated a landslide victory for Tebboune with nearly 95% support, but these figures were contested by rival candidates.

The Constitutional Court subsequently reviewed the results, leading to a revised figure placing Tebboune significantly ahead of his two opponents, Abdelaali Hassani and Youcef Aouchiche.

While Tebboune’s victory was widely anticipated, the election saw a notably low turnout of 46.1%. Tebboune’s first term, which began in 2019, followed mass pro-democracy protests and a widely boycotted election. He has since focused on promoting economic growth, citing successes such as increased employment and wages in the natural gas-rich nation.

However, the election results were marred by accusations of irregularities and fraud. Both Hassani and Aouchiche challenged the initial results, accusing the electoral authority of manipulation. Notably, all three campaigns, including Tebboune’s, issued a joint statement expressing concerns about discrepancies in the participation figures.

Despite the controversies surrounding the election, Tebboune’s victory marks a continuation of his policies and priorities. While Algeria’s economy has shown signs of growth, it remains heavily reliant on oil and gas revenue to fund social programs, highlighting the challenges ahead for the president in his second term.
