**New Delhi:** Six years after its initial release, the critically acclaimed horror drama “Tumbbad” has returned to theatres with a resounding success, earning a remarkable ₹1.65 crore on its first day, more than tripling its original opening day collection. The re-release, spearheaded by actor-producer Sohum Shah, has surpassed even the re-release figures of iconic films like “Sholay”, “Mughal-e-Azam”, and “Rockstar”.

“Tumbbad”, a story of greed and obsession set in a Maharashtra village, was directed by Rahi Anil Barve and produced by Shah under his banner Sohum Shah Films. Its initial release in 2018 garnered widespread praise for its atmospheric horror and captivating narrative.

The film’s return to theatres has sparked excitement among fans and industry professionals alike. Kamal Gianchandani, CEO of PVR INOX Pictures Limited, expressed confidence in the film’s long-term success, calling it “a blockbuster in the re-release category.”

Akshay Rathi, a theatre owner from central India, attributed the film’s triumph to its loyal fanbase who missed the chance to experience it on the big screen initially. He believes “Tumbbad” could become the highest-grossing re-release, with advance bookings already exceeding 20,000 tickets.

Encouraged by the film’s success, Sohum Shah has announced a sequel, “Tumbbad 2,” promising to delve deeper into the theme of greed and expand upon the universe created in the original film.

The re-release of “Tumbbad” serves as a testament to the enduring power of strong storytelling and the enduring appeal of a film that continues to captivate audiences even years after its initial release.
