**Bengaluru:** The newly implemented access-controlled system at the Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Baiyappanahalli has been met with some initial hiccups, leading to arguments between visitors and staff. The system, aimed at decongesting the station, is a new concept for Bengaluru, with officials acknowledging that teething problems are expected.
To address these issues, the Bangalore Division’s commercial department is launching a massive awareness campaign, including bulk SMSes and newspaper advertisements. They are also working with the Centre for Railway Information System to facilitate the dissemination of information. The campaign aims to educate the public about the new rules and procedures.
The access-controlled system, implemented by Balaji Foods & Beverages, allows vehicles to stay within the station premises free of charge for 10 minutes. Overstay charges are imposed for vehicles remaining beyond this period, ranging from Rs 40 for two-wheelers and Rs 50 for three/four-wheelers for up to 20 minutes. Charges escalate further with longer durations.
The Railways believe the system, successfully implemented in other stations like Hazrat Nizamuddin and Baroda, will ultimately prove beneficial in managing traffic and congestion at SMVT. They are confident that the public will embrace the system once fully informed about its benefits and operational procedures.
