Sat Sep 14 16:57:40 UTC 2024: ## Mamata Banerjee’s Appeal to Striking Doctors Falls on Deaf Ears
**Kolkata, India:** The ongoing impasse between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and protesting junior doctors took another turn on Saturday, with a scheduled meeting between the two parties failing to materialize. The doctors, who are demanding justice for the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College, have been on strike for over a week.
Banerjee, who waited at her residence for the doctors’ delegation, expressed frustration over the repeated delays and cancellations of talks. The key sticking point continues to be the doctors’ demand for live-streaming the meeting, a request the Chief Minister has repeatedly rejected, citing legal constraints.
“As the RG Kar issue is before the court, we cannot allow live streaming,” Banerjee explained. “I will video-record the meeting and provide you with a copy only after permission from the Supreme Court.”
The doctors’ delegation arrived at Banerjee’s residence 45 minutes late but were only allowed to enter with 15 representatives, a move that further agitated the protestors. They remain adamant in their demands for accountability, action against those involved in the alleged crime, and improved security for healthcare workers.
Earlier in the day, Banerjee had made a surprise visit to the protest site outside Swasthya Bhawan, where she attempted to address the doctors’ concerns and assured them she was working towards a solution. “I came to meet you as your ‘didi’ (elder sister), not as the chief minister,” she said. “I assure you that I will study your demands and take action if someone is found guilty.”
However, despite her assurances and personal appeal, the protestors have remained steadfast in their demands, unwilling to back down until concrete discussions are held and solutions are offered.
The stalemate over live-streaming echoes a similar breakdown in talks on Thursday, when a meeting at Nabanna, the state secretariat, failed to take place for the same reason. The crisis continues, leaving healthcare services in the state severely affected.
