**DETROIT** – In a game dominated by pitching, the Detroit Tigers secured a 1-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night, thanks to a masterful combined effort from their pitching staff and a solo home run by Kerry Carpenter.
The Tigers’ pitching trio of Beau Brieske, Brant Hurter, and Brenan Hanifee shut down the Orioles’ offense for seven innings, retiring the first 21 batters before Adley Rutschman drew a walk in the eighth.
Hurter, a rookie left-hander, was particularly impressive, striking out eight batters in 5 2/3 innings.
“Give that left-hander a lot of credit – he’s got a funky arm angle and he was pumping strikes,” said Orioles manager Brandon Hyde.
The Orioles finally broke through in the ninth inning when Gunnar Henderson tripled, ending the no-hit bid and giving Baltimore their first hit of the game.
Tyler Holton, who relieved Hurter in the ninth, closed the game out, striking out Anthony Santander to earn his eighth save of the season.
The Tigers’ win moved them within 2 1/2 games of the Minnesota Twins for the final AL Wild Card spot, while the Orioles dropped three games behind the AL East-leading New York Yankees.
The two teams will play the second of their three-game series on Saturday evening.
