**Joplin, MO** – Mary Colin, head volleyball coach at Ozark Christian College, is a testament to the human spirit’s resilience. Despite being diagnosed with Stargardt disease, a form of juvenile macular degeneration, at age 14, Colin has not only continued to play and coach sports but has also thrived as a principal at New Heights Christian Academy and competed in CrossFit games.
Colin’s journey began with a gradual loss of central vision. She learned to adapt, even playing softball as a catcher despite her inability to see the ball clearly. As her vision worsened, she continued to excel in sports and education, choosing to keep her condition private.
“Early in my career, I didn’t advertise it because I didn’t want people to use it as a reason to not be confident in me,” Colin said.
Today, Colin openly embraces her challenge. She no longer drives and relies on her husband, Adam, to navigate her surroundings. She competes in the Adaptive CrossFit Games for athletes with physical limitations, and she hopes her story inspires others to overcome their own obstacles.
“If people are motivated by me doing these things with low vision, I have to use that as a tool to encourage or motivate others,” Colin said. “If somehow my story can push them to try, to push through, that’s where I’m at right now.”
Colin’s story is a powerful reminder that even in the face of adversity, determination, and a positive mindset can lead to extraordinary accomplishments. She demonstrates that limitations can be overcome with a belief in oneself and a willingness to adapt.
