**HOUSTON, TX** – Two NASA astronauts, Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, currently stranded on the International Space Station (ISS), will still be able to cast their votes in the upcoming US presidential election. Their extended stay, initially planned for eight days, has stretched to February 2025 due to technical issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft.
This will not, however, prevent them from exercising their democratic right. The duo will participate in the election through a secure electronic process established in 1997, specifically for astronauts voting from space. The astronauts will receive encrypted PDF ballots from Texas officials, allowing them to vote from 250 miles above Earth.
The voting system was first implemented in 1997 when Texas lawmakers passed a bill allowing astronauts to vote from space. Astronaut David Wolf, who was aboard the Mir Space Station at the time, became the first American to cast his vote from space.
For the 2024 election, both Williams and Wilmore will vote in Texas, participating in the high-profile elections including the US presidential race and the Texas Senate election.
“It’s a very important role that we play as citizens including those elections, and NASA makes it very easy for us to do that,” said Wilmore, emphasizing the importance of participating in democracy even from space.
While the astronauts have not disclosed their voting preferences, the process ensures their votes are securely cast and processed like any other ballot. This unique situation highlights the commitment to upholding democratic principles even in the extraordinary environment of space.
