Anantapur, India: In a lopsided second-round encounter of the Duleep Trophy, India A, led by Mayank Agarwal, delivered a commanding performance against Shreyas Iyer’s India D, extending their lead to a formidable 222 runs at the end of Day 2.
India D, still reeling from their opening-round defeat, struggled to recover from a disastrous first innings, folding for a paltry 183 runs. Devdutt Padikkal, with a valiant 92, was the lone bright spot for India D, while star batsmen Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson failed to deliver, dismissed for 0 and 5 respectively.
Iyer, however, redeemed himself with a crucial wicket, dismissing the dangerous Mayank Agarwal in the final over of the day. Agarwal, who had put together a 115-run opening partnership with Pratham Singh (59*), fell prey to Iyer’s first delivery, providing a much-needed morale boost for India D.
Earlier in the day, India A had resumed their innings on a strong footing, with Shams Mulani missing out on a century by a mere 11 runs. The left-arm spinner, along with Tanush Kotian, had helped India A recover from 144/6 on Thursday to post a respectable 290 in their first innings.
India A’s bowlers continued to impress, with Khaleel Ahmed and Aaqib Khan picking up 3 wickets each, dismantling India D’s top order and putting them firmly on the back foot.
Despite Padikkal’s heroic stand, India D’s batting woes and their inability to contain the strong India A batting line-up suggest a challenging road ahead in the second innings. With India A firmly in control, the match appears to be heading towards a decisive victory for the Agarwal-led side.
