**Hastings, NE** – Two candidates vying for the Nebraska Legislature’s District 33 seat faced off Friday at a League of Women Voters forum, outlining their platforms and tackling pressing issues facing the state.
Dan Lonowski, a Republican and retired educator with military experience, and Michelle Smith, a Democrat and mental health therapist, are competing to replace term-limited state Sen. Steve Halloran. The district encompasses Adams and Kearney counties, and parts of Phelps County.
The forum, co-sponsored by the YWCA, Hastings Public Access Channel, and Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce, saw the candidates engage in a lively discussion on topics ranging from education and healthcare to housing and social issues.
Lonowski emphasized his extensive experience with government and his ability to “reach across the aisle” to find common ground. Smith focused on her experience in mental health and her desire to address pressing issues like workforce shortages and housing development.
Candidates debated the recent Supreme Court decision on private school scholarships, with Lonowski emphasizing student choice and Smith stressing the need to uphold the will of the people. They also shared their views on housing development, diversity and inclusion, and gun control.
On the topic of gender identity, Lonowski stated his belief in two genders, while Smith emphasized the importance of mental health services for youth, particularly within the LGBTQ community.
When it came to abortion, Lonowski expressed his pro-life stance while Smith championed reproductive healthcare, including access to IVF.
Both candidates stressed their commitment to local values and their desire to represent their constituents effectively. Lonowski highlighted his endorsements from Gov. Jim Pillen and praised Pillen’s leadership. Smith emphasized her commitment to building a stronger Nebraska through improved healthcare, education, and economic development.
The forum provided voters with a valuable opportunity to hear from both candidates and gain insight into their positions on key issues. The election for District 33 is scheduled for November.
