Athens, Alabama – A 10-year-old student at Athens Intermediate School was arrested on Friday for allegedly making a terrorist threat, according to a statement from the mayor’s office. The arrest comes after a series of similar threats made to area schools this week, prompting concerns and heightened security measures.
Police were alerted around 11 a.m. to a student texting threats to students at Athens Middle School. Working swiftly with school officials, they identified the student who was not present at school that day. The student was subsequently arrested at their home.
Athens City Schools has released a statement urging parents to remind their children about the seriousness of sharing threats on social media. The statement highlighted that while many of the threats circulating this week originated in other states, they continue to spread fear among Athens students.
