**Kolkata, India -** Junior doctors in West Bengal have escalated their protest against the alleged mishandling of a post-graduate trainee’s rape and murder at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. In a four-page letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Union Health Minister J P Nadda, the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front has called for intervention to ensure justice for the victim and a safe working environment.
The letter, sent on Thursday, details concerns regarding the alleged mishandling of the crime scene and forensic evidence by hospital authorities and certain state officials. It accuses them of showing little regard for the sanctity of the crime scene and the victim’s family.
“In this turbid atmosphere of fear, distrust and hopelessness”, the letter reads, “the junior doctors in West Bengal have been forced to avoid working within the hospital premises.” While continuing to provide healthcare services, they have adopted alternative modes of working to express their discontent and demand action.
The junior doctors’ protest began on August 9th after the tragic incident. The letter highlights the deep mistrust and fear they harbor towards the authorities, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation and the removal of “noxious elements” within the health system to ensure a safe working environment for medical professionals.
The letter expresses hope that the intervention of the highest authorities will shed light on the situation and bring about positive change. The junior doctors remain steadfast in their demand for justice and a safe working environment.
