**New Delhi, India** – Ishan Kishan, the once sought-after wicketkeeper-batter for India, is making a strong statement in the domestic arena with a century for India C in the second-round of the Duleep Trophy. The knock comes after a tumultuous period for Kishan, who saw a rapid decline in his international career.
Kishan, who debuted in Tests during the West Indies tour last year, was also a part of the ODI World Cup squad. He was a regular in T20Is as well, but his career took a downturn after he returned home midway through the South Africa tour for personal reasons. The reasons behind his exclusion from the Indian team remain unclear, but Kishan’s absence from domestic cricket before the IPL was criticized by many.
The lack of domestic game-time had an adverse effect on Kishan’s international prospects. He was replaced by KS Bharat on the South Africa tour and subsequently lost his central contract. Kishan hasn’t played for India in any format this year.
His resurgence comes at a time when Rishabh Pant, the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in Tests, has returned from a serious accident. While Pant is back in the Test side, his performances in white-ball cricket haven’t been impressive. This presents an opportunity for Kishan to stake his claim for a spot in the Indian team.
However, with Pant’s return and the fierce competition for places, Kishan will have to maintain consistent performances in domestic cricket to force his way back into the national team. While his century in the Duleep Trophy is a positive step, the road ahead remains challenging.
