**New Delhi, September 12, 2024** – Opposition parties have slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in the Ganesh Puja celebrations at the residence of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, calling it a violation of the separation of powers between the executive and judiciary.

The controversy erupted after a viral video surfaced showing PM Modi performing ‘Aarti’ alongside CJI Chandrachud and his wife. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut expressed concerns about the implications for ongoing legal cases, particularly the Maharashtra political crisis case, where the central government is a party. He questioned the impartiality of the CJI given his close ties to the Prime Minister.

Senior lawyer Indira Jaising also echoed these concerns, alleging that the CJI has compromised the independence of the judiciary by engaging in such a public display of camaraderie with the Prime Minister.

RJD leader Manoj Jha expressed similar sentiments, stating that while attending a personal event like the Ganesh Puja is fine, it sends an “uncomfortable message” about the independence of institutions.

However, BJP leaders have defended the event, calling it a “devoted Ganapathi Pooja” and accusing the opposition of “crying” over a simple act of civility and togetherness. BJP national general secretary (Organisation) BL Santhosh refuted claims of socialising and dismissed concerns about the independence of the judiciary.

Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora also condemned the opposition’s criticism, calling it reckless and damaging to the institution’s integrity. He highlighted the CJI’s commitment to serving the office with integrity and accused the opposition of seeking to tarnish his legacy.

The incident has sparked a debate about the separation of powers and the potential impact on the judiciary’s independence. The opposition’s concerns highlight the need for transparency and public perception of the judiciary’s impartiality, while the BJP’s defense emphasizes the personal nature of the event and the importance of maintaining cordial relations between different branches of government.
