Thu Sep 12 01:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Demi Moore Stars in Grotesque Body Horror Satire “The Substance”

**Cannes Film Festival hit “The Substance” is set to make a splash this fall with its controversial take on Hollywood’s obsession with youth and beauty.**

Director Coralie Fargeat, known for her 2017 rape-revenge thriller “Revenge,” returns with a darkly comedic body horror film that tackles the societal pressure to remain eternally young. “The Substance” follows Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), a fading TV aerobics guru who’s unceremoniously replaced by a younger version of herself.

After a near-fatal car accident, Elisabeth discovers a mysterious anti-aging procedure called “the substance,” which allows her to create a youthful clone, Sue, played by Margaret Qualley. The film explores the consequences of this “Faustian bargain,” as Sue revels in her newfound youth and Elisabeth struggles to reclaim her life.

Fargeat’s film, described as “a grotesque, maximalist satire,” utilizes a visually striking aesthetic with vibrant reds, fish-eye lenses, and excessive blood and gore to drive home its message. Though the film’s core themes of societal pressures and the pursuit of youth may be obscured by the spectacle, the powerful performances by Moore and Qualley are sure to generate buzz.

“The Substance” was nearly left without a distributor after Universal pulled out of the deal, but Mubi stepped in to rescue the film. Following its positive reception at Cannes, the film is expected to generate significant debate and discussion as it makes its way to audiences this fall.
