**Visakhapatnam, India (September 12, 2023):** The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) announced the passing of its General Secretary, Sitaram Yechury, at the age of 78. Yechury, who was known for his strong and articulate stances, his commitment to coalition politics, and his good sense of humor, breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.
Yechury, the fifth General Secretary of the CPI(M), assumed leadership in 2015 at a time when the party was facing a period of decline. He identified the need to strengthen the Left forces and unite democratic movements across India. Yechury was a vocal critic of the economic policies that burdened the people and the communal ideologies that sought to divide the nation.
He was particularly known for his strong advocacy for the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), opposing its privatization and emphasizing the importance of public sector undertakings (PSUs). Yechury believed that these entities represented the wealth of the nation and served the people. He even participated in a public meeting last year to support the ongoing agitation against VSP’s privatization.
Yechury’s legacy as a leader is intertwined with the city of Visakhapatnam, where he had strong roots and was fluent in Telugu. In a tribute to his commitment to the cause of the people, his body will be donated to AIIMS for training and research.
The nation mourns the loss of a versatile and pragmatic leader who dedicated his life to the ideals of socialism and the betterment of the people of India.
