New Delhi, India: Sitaram Yechury, the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), passed away on September 12, 2024, after a prolonged illness. He was 72.

Yechury had been battling an acute respiratory tract infection and was undergoing treatment at the AIIMS hospital in Delhi for the past several days. He served as a Rajya Sabha MP twice and held the post of CPI(M) General Secretary for many years.

According to his 2017 election affidavit, Yechury’s net worth was approximately ₹82,71,066. He declared having ₹44,000 in his Andhra Bank account and ₹55,000 in his SBI account. His wife, Seema Chishti, had over ₹23 lakh in fixed deposits and mutual funds. She also had ₹3 lakh in her bank account.

Yechury did not have any LIC or insurance policies in his name, but his wife held two LIC policies worth ₹10 lakh each. She also owned two Maruti Zen cars and over ₹5 lakh worth of gold and silver jewelry.

While Yechury did not own any property, his wife’s name was on a property worth around ₹20 lakh. The couple had no outstanding loans.

Yechury’s demise is a significant loss for the Indian political landscape. His contributions to the CPI(M) and his long career in public service will be remembered.
