Singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes took to the stage at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, delivering a powerful performance of his new song “Nobody Knows” from his upcoming album, “Shawn”. The performance was stripped down, featuring Mendes on acoustic guitar and a smoky atmosphere, allowing the raw emotion of the song to take center stage.
“Nobody Knows” is a melancholic love song with lyrics that explore the complexities of a relationship, particularly when alcohol is involved. Mendes’ vocals were potent, conveying the longing and vulnerability of the song’s narrative.
This marked Mendes’ fifth appearance at the VMAs, with his previous performances including hits like “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back”, “In My Blood”, “If I Can’t Have You”, and “Señorita”. Mendes has been nominated for 13 VMAs throughout his career, winning twice for the collaboration “Señorita” in 2019.
“Shawn”, set to be released on October 18th, is Mendes’ first album in four years. It follows his 2020 release “Wonder”, and fans have already been treated to two singles, “Why Why Why” and “Isn’t That Enough”.
In a social media post announcing the album, Mendes spoke about the healing power of music and the challenges he faced in recent years, crediting his friends and family for supporting him through difficult times.
To celebrate the release of “Shawn”, Mendes will be embarking on a series of intimate theater concerts in cities including Nashville, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and Seattle. These shows will mark his return to live performance after cancelling his “Wonder” world tour in 2022 to prioritize his mental health.
