Fri Sep 13 12:46:51 UTC 2024: ## “Sector 36”: A Chilling but Flawed Depiction of the Nithari Killings
The film “Sector 36,” inspired by the horrific 2005-2006 Nithari serial killings, attempts to capture the chilling reality of the tragedy. It portrays the brutal crimes committed by Prem (Vikrant Massey), a character loosely based on Surinder Koli, who confessed to raping and murdering nearly 20 children. The film’s opening disclaimer acknowledges the inspiration, but changes names and locations to avoid claiming authenticity.
The first half of the film effectively builds tension, showcasing Prem’s transformation into a monstrous figure through masterful acting by Vikrant Massey. However, the film loses its grip when Prem is allowed to deliver a lengthy confession, dissipating the fear meticulously built up earlier.
The film’s portrayal of the police investigation is somewhat uneven. While Inspector Ram Charan Pandey (Deepak Dobriyal) is presented as a dedicated officer who eventually uncovers the truth, other characters, such as the corrupt superior officer, appear one-dimensional and stereotypical.
“Sector 36” suffers from a lack of depth in certain characters, particularly the alleged paedophile, Bassi, who is let off too easily. Despite these shortcomings, Deepak Dobriyal’s performance stands out, effectively portraying the struggles of a police officer forced to confront a brutal reality.
While the film aims to shed light on the Nithari killings, its uneven pacing and somewhat simplistic portrayal of certain characters prevent it from achieving its full potential. “Sector 36” ultimately leaves viewers with a sense of unease and a lingering feeling of injustice, mirroring the real-life tragedy it attempts to depict.
